For the back and the wraps, a very fine set of bookmatched maple was chosen, symmetrically cut and joined with an ebony fillet.
The same type of maple was used to line the headstock at the front.
The case was built using the traditional system of vapour-bending the ribs, shaped and glued to the back and soundboard with the aid of perimeter counterbands.
Internally, the soundboard and back have been ‘ribbed’ with a ‘brace’ system with a ‘lightened X’ pattern with spruce strips reduced to a minimum: the end result obtained with this system is excellent bass restitution and brilliance on the high notes.
The thickness of the case (10 cm) and the reduced thickness of the woods of the ribs, back and soundboard that make it up, allow for a ‘wide’ and ‘deep’ sound.
Particular attention was paid to the design of the rosette: with the idea of emphasising the woods and their natural colour, master Massimo Dal Col constructed a rosette inspired by the stained-glass windows of Gothic cathedrals in which the woods were assembled by shading their natural colours, from maple white to ebony black; two circular fillets of abalone and ebony complete the work.
The rosette, inlaid in the soundboard, is the only note of ‘colour’ in an instrument with a ‘light’ dominant.
The neck was attached to the case with a ‘dovetail’ system, glued on.
The fingerboard was inlaid with the MV logo in mother-of-pearl at the 12th fret.
The bridge was designed and made solely for this instrument and was constructed from marbled maple.
A K&K piezo preamplifier system has been inserted under the bridge and the controls are inside the soundhole.
